About the Centre

The Centre is an attached unit of Western Springs College that works with young people from over forty Auckland secondary schools.

The young people have been referred by these schools or other agencies because their behaviour is causing concern at their high schools.  They need time-out to change their behaviours.

Major Aim of the Centre

To provide academic, social, vocational and practical education to meet the needs of individual students who might otherwise be placed at a disadvantage in later life, and to facilitate such changes as may be necessary to enable them to move successfully back into regular high school or into further education.

Staffing

Our staff team is highly skilled and willing to provide the opportunity for students to receive maximum   assistance in their academic and personal development.

What do we offer?

  •  A large family (non-residential ) atmosphere

  • Effective discipline and firm management

  •  Support to parents and students

  •    A chance to start again where former reputation does not influence present acceptance

  •     Assistance with academic skills in small groups or on a one-to-one basis

  •     Courses in personal development according to needs

  •   A chance to gain work experience

  • A very well equipped learning environment

  •   An opportunity to learn some practical life-skills

Referrals

All students referred must be on the roll of a regular high school.  The referring school should have tried some community and/or educational resources available to meet the student’s needs before making referral to the Centre.

Schools, family or other agencies may request a preliminary interview. If the student and family want to pursue acceptance at the Centre, they are required to ask for an interview at which time a referral must be completed by the student’s school on a form that is available from the Centre.

Following the interview, the student, his/her family and the Centre staff decide whether the Centre is the appropriate option for  the student.

What do we do?

We assess students’ abilities and needs then develop a programme to suit.

Academic assistance is given while each student works on subjects sent and marked by the Correspondence School in Wellington.

A personal and caring atmosphere is developed in which students can feel supported in their endeavour to change.
